英語回文詩：《迷失的一代》

早上打開電腦，收到一段朋友傳來的錄像片，裡面沒有圖象，只有文字，是一首英語回文詩 (Palindrome)，配上朗讀。因為是回文體，詩一行一行顯示，到了最後又一行一行倒回來。錄像很短，只有一分多鐘，但很有衝擊力。主要是因為順行與倒行的意思相反，文反行，意亦反行，是很形像的逆向思維。

中國詩中有不少回文詩，「回」的花式不少。英文的回文詩看來只能限於一行一行的回，而不能像中文可以一字一字、一行一行、半行半行的回，甚至寫成圖案，從各個方向都讀得通。

朋友傳來的，是美國AARP(美國退休人士協會)二零零七年一次錄像攝影比賽的亞軍作品，比賽通過YouTube 舉辦，名為u@50 Challenge，只限18至30歲者參加，以期看到年輕一代對50歲時生活的期望。

亞軍作品名為《迷失的一代》(The Lost Generation)，內容其實是順行時迷惘、悲觀，倒行就清醒、樂觀了。能不能翻譯過來?一試，原來並不難。(中文的回文詩一定無法翻譯成其他文字。)

破壞環境是常態

不可再說

我的同齡人和我珍惜這個地球

可以清楚看到

我這一代冷漠無情

蠢人才會以為

世間有希望

這些都會成為事實，除非我們反其道而行

I am part of a lost generation

and I refuse to believe that

I can change the world

I realize this may be a shock but

“Happiness comes from within.”

is a lie, and

“Money will make me happy.”

So in 30 years I will tell my children

they are not the most important thing in my life

My employer will know that

I have my priorities straight because

work

is more important than

family

I tell you this

Once upon a time

Families stayed together

but this will not be true in my era

This is a quick fix society

Experts tell me

30 years from now, I will be celebrating the 10th anniversary of my divorce

I do not concede that

I will live in a country of my own making

In the future

Environmental destruction will be the norm

No longer can it be said that

My peers and I care about this earth

It will be evident that

My generation is apathetic and lethargic

It is foolish to presume that

There is hope.

And all of this will come true unless we choose to reverse it .
